Jeho historie sah\u00e1 tak dlouho jako historie civilizace v Egypt\u011b. O historii tohoto guvern\u00e9ra se m\u016f\u017eeme ur\u010dit\u011b dozv\u011bd\u011bt od zb\u00fdvaj\u00edc\u00edch staroegyptsk\u00fdch pam\u00e1tek v Abydosu. B\u011bhem prvn\u00edch \u010dty\u0159 starov\u011bk\u00fdch egyptsk\u00fdch dynasti\u00ed byl Abydos hlavn\u00edm m\u011bstem Egypta. Tak\u00e9 starobyl\u00e9 m\u011bsto El-Tina, vesnice bahna nebo hl\u00edny severn\u011b od Abydosu, bylo domovem a s\u00eddlem Narmeru. Do t\u00e9 doby m\u011blo toto \u0159editelstv\u00ed \u0159adu m\u011bst v\u010detn\u011b Mishty na severu a Esny na jihu.
