De tempels van Abu Simbel _ de beroemdste uit rotsen gehouwen tempels in Egypte. Ze bevinden zich in de buurt van het moderne dorp Abu Simbel, bij de Tweede Nijl Cataract, de grens tussen Neder-Nubi\u00eb en Boven-Nubi\u00eb. Er zijn er twee, de Grote Tempel, opgedragen aan Ramses II zelf, en de Kleine Tempel, opgedragen aan zijn vrouw Koningin Amun-haar-khepeshef.<\/amp-fit-text><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plaats<\/h2><\/amp-fit-text>\n\n\n\n

De Abu Simbel-tempels zijn twee enorme rotstempels in het Nubische dorp Abu Simbel, Aswan-gouvernement, Egypte. Met andere woorden, deze tempels staan \u200b\u200bop de westelijke oever van Lake Nasser, ongeveer 230 km ten zuidwesten van Aswan.<\/amp-fit-text><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Geschiedenis<\/h2><\/amp-fit-text>\n\n\n\n

De tweeling tempels zijn oorspronkelijk uitgehouwen uit de berghelling in de 13e eeuw voor Christus, tijdens de 19e dynastie regeren van de farao Ramses II. Tijdens zijn bewind bouwde Ramses II verschillende grote tempels, in Nubi\u00eb, om indruk te maken op de macht van het Nubische Egypte en om een \u200b\u200bbron van goud en vele andere kostbare handelsgoederen veilig te stellen.<\/amp-fit-text><\/p>\n\n\n\n

De bouw van het tempelcomplex begon in ongeveer 1264 voor Christus en duurde ongeveer 20 jaar, tot 1244 voor Christus. Tijdens het oude Egypte noemden ze het “Tempel van Ramses, geliefd bij Amun”.<\/amp-fit-text><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Na de bouw van de Aswan High Dam aan de rivier de Nijl was de verplaatsing van de tempels heel noodzakelijk. Anders zouden ze zijn ondergedompeld tijdens de aanleg van Lake Nasser, het enorme kunstmatige waterreservoir dat achter die Dam was gevormd.<\/amp-fit-text><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Redding van de tempels in Abu Simbel<\/h3><\/amp-fit-text>\n\n\n\n

In 1959 begon een internationale donatiecampagne om de monumenten van Nubi\u00eb te redden. Inderdaad, de meest zuidelijke overblijfselen van deze oude menselijke beschaving werden bedreigd door de stijgende wateren achter de Aswan High Dam.<\/amp-fit-text><\/p>\n\n\n\n
