Amenhotep III, farao van de dynastie XVIII, bouwde deze tempel tijdens zijn bewind rond 1400 v.Chr., Waar hij werd aanbeden als een god.<\/amp-fit-text><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><amp-fit-text layout=\"fixed-height\" min-font-size=\"6\" max-font-size=\"72\" height=\"80\">In zijn tijd was dit tempelcomplex het grootste in Egypte. De tempel besloeg in totaal 35 hectare. Alle tempels die na deze werden gebouwd, konden niet dezelfde afmetingen bereiken; zelfs de tempel van Karnak, zoals deze stond tijdens het bewind van Amenhotep, was kleiner.<\/amp-fit-text><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><amp-fit-text layout=\"fixed-height\" min-font-size=\"6\" max-font-size=\"72\" height=\"80\">Helaas werd deze enorme tempel om een \u200b\u200baantal redenen dramatisch verwoest. Kort na de bouw werd het verwoest door een aardbeving rond 1200 voor Christus, waardoor alleen de 2 enorme kolossen bij de ingang nog overeind bleven. Deze werden verder vernietigd door een aardbeving in 27 voor Christus, waarna ze gedeeltelijk werden gereconstrueerd door de Romeinse autoriteiten.<\/amp-fit-text><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><amp-fit-text layout=\"fixed-height\" min-font-size=\"6\" max-font-size=\"72\" height=\"80\">De wetenschappelijke studies toonden aan dat het complex bestond uit drie pylonen, elk met kolossale beelden. Aan het uiteinde van deze rechthoekige tempel was een peristyle hof omgeven door kolommen. Tegenwoordig zijn er vier van de beelden opnieuw opgericht, waarvan er 8 wachten om opnieuw te worden opgericht. Het Luxor Museum huisvest ongeveer 200 beelden die in deze tempel werden gevonden.<\/amp-fit-text><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><amp-fit-text layout=\"fixed-height\" min-font-size=\"6\" max-font-size=\"72\" height=\"80\">Hier geven we een idee over de meest interessante stukken die nog in deze tempel staan:<\/amp-fit-text><\/p>\n\n\n\n<amp-fit-text layout=\"fixed-height\" min-font-size=\"6\" max-font-size=\"72\" height=\"80\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">De kolossen van Memnon<\/h2><\/amp-fit-text>\n\n\n\n<p><amp-fit-text layout=\"fixed-height\" min-font-size=\"6\" max-font-size=\"72\" height=\"80\">Deze dubbele beelden verbeelden Amenhotep III in een zittende positie. Twee kortere figuren zijn uitgehouwen in de voorste troon naast zijn benen voor zijn vrouw Tiye en moeder Mutemwiya. De zijpanelen tonen de Nijlgod Hapy.<\/amp-fit-text><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><amp-fit-text layout=\"fixed-height\" min-font-size=\"6\" max-font-size=\"72\" height=\"80\">De beelden zijn gemaakt van blokken kwartsietzandsteen die in el-Gabal el-Ahmar zijn gewonnen en 675 km over land naar Luxor zijn getransporteerd. Na de 27e aardbeving hebben Romeinse ingenieurs de noordelijke kolos gereconstrueerd. Er wordt aangenomen dat ze blokken gebruikten die mogelijk afkomstig zijn van Edfu. De kolossen bereiken een torenhoge 18 m hoog en wegen naar schatting 720 ton elk. In het geval dat we de stenen platforms opnemen waarop ze staan. Als ze uit elkaar zijn, hebben de platforms een hoogte van ongeveer 4 m en zijn de twee figuren ongeveer 15 m.<\/amp-fit-text><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><amp-fit-text layout=\"fixed-height\" min-font-size=\"6\" max-font-size=\"72\" height=\"80\">Het zuidelijke beeld bestaat nog steeds uit \u00e9\u00e9n stuk steen; terwijl in 27 v.Chr. een grote aardbeving de noordelijke kolos verbrijzelde, deze vanaf de taille instortte en de onderste helft barstte.
