Thebes has a long history rooted back to the early development of Egyptian civilization. Luxor grew up in a small village when Memphis was the capital of ancient Egypt. There, the city became the new capital of this unified country. The military campaigns started from Thebes by the pharaohs of the New Kingdom. In short, from the 18th Dynasty until the 20th Dynasty, the city became ancient Egypt’s political, religious and military capital.

However, the city’s political and military importance faded during the Late Period, as Thebes Was Replaced by several capitals in northern Egypt, such as Popastis, Cisse, and finally Alexandria.

After 1811 AD, the year of the opening of the travel agency Thomas Cook, Luxor became a tourist destination. The city became a holiday area and bustle for the English rich.
