Foundation of Hurghada

Hurghada is one of the Al Bahr Al Ahmar governorate towns on the Red Sea coast. The Egyptians built the present city of Hurghada in the early 20th century. Until recently, it was a small fishing village with a small population. Since the 19th century, Egyptian and foreign investors have continually enlarged the city. Therefore, it became the leading coastal resort on the Red Sea.

Undoubtedly, the discovery of Oil in this area in 1913 enhanced its rapid development. Regardless, its production and export began in 1921 under British oil magnates.

Hurghada Population and Divisions

Hurghada has a population of 248,000 and is divided into:

  • El Dahar (Downtown) – the old town
  • Sakala – the city centre
  • Village area

  • El Mamsha (Village Road) – a pedestrianized street with a length of over 4 km

El Mamsha

Many of Hurghada’s newer hotels, restaurants, and shops are along El Mamsha. Most of the latest and largest hotel resorts are between Mamsha and Sahl Hasheesh on El Mamsha.

Dahar is the town’s oldest part, where the traditional bazaar, the post office and the long-distance bus stations (Go Bus and Upper Egypt Bus) are situated. The busiest area is Sakala, the city centre on Sheraton Road, with hotels, shops and restaurants.

There was so many places to visit, at the end of excursion I couldn’t feel my legs but it was so worth it. We visited a lot of markets, beautiful embankment, a mosque and lots of other places. We even got a chance for shopping! I didn’t know it was possible to do so many things in one excursion but it was definitely possible. Do I recommend? Absolutely!
