If you’re dreaming of a breathtaking adventure, you cannot miss the magnificent stone marvels of Petra. The journey may require a bus, boat, horse, or camelback travel over the six-hour trip from Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, but trust us when we say that the experience is worth every effort.

Petra is more than just a popular tourist destination in Jordan. It’s a historical gem that boasts immensity, beauty, and significance incomparable to any other archaeological site worldwide. You’ll have the chance to explore the city of Petra, carved into the mountains almost 2,000 years ago, and witness its grandeur firsthand.

Our itinerary includes pick-up at your hotel, a bus to the borders, a ferry to Petra, and a two-hour drive to Petra to start your adventure with an English-speaking guide.

Petra was once home to 30,000 people who thrived in this desert and quenched their thirst through a channel and cistern system that harvested and stored winter rains for future use. The Nabateans were incredibly skilled engineers who even built gardens amidst the harsh environment.

Your first walk in Petra will be through the stunning Canyon of Siq, a natural geological feature formed from a deep split in the sandstone rocks. This Canyon is one of the main reasons Petra was an alluring site for the Nabateans, behind a narrow and easily defensible canyon known as the Siq.

Your next visit should be to the Pharaoh’s great treasury, Al Khazneh. It has classical Greek-influenced architecture and was built initially probably between 100 BC and 200 AD. The Nabateans were excellent engineers; they made water conservation and irrigation systems and carved their homes, temples, graves, and tombs out of the rocks.

Let’s not forget about the Roman Theater, where a period follows in which the dominant civilization combines Greek, Egyptian, and Syrian elements, pointing to the age of the Ptolemies. With the fantastic skill of the Nabateans, they built water conservation and irrigation systems and carved their homes, temples, graves, and tombs right out of the rocks.

After a memorable day of exploring, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch in a fantastic restaurant in the city centre.

But before we head back to the port, we’ll take you to visit Al Habis Fort, where you’ll have a fine view over the entire central Petra basin, where the Al-Habis Crusader Fortress is located. It is a secondary fortress designed and sited to control the strategic communication route within the Petra basin that was not in sight of the Al-Wu’eira Fortress.

Petra is not just a destination; it’s an experience of a lifetime. Petra is worth the journey if you’re looking for a trip that will leave you with lasting memories and a sense of wonder.

Schedule in Petra

  • The Petra Tour offers a chance to relish the glorious past showcased in its arts and architecture, especially in the ornate buildings like the Treasury, which were carved directly into the soft sandstone cliffs. The Nabataean capital is also an incredible example of urban planning. Around 30,000 people once lived in the arid desert. They quenched their thirst through a channel and cistern system that collected and stored winter rains for future use. The system was efficient enough to support several gardens as well.
  • When you arrive at Petra, your trip begins with a walk through the Siq Canyon. This natural geological formation originated from a deep split in the sandstone rocks as a waterway flowing into Wadi Mosses. The Siq Canyon is one of the main reasons Petra was such an attractive site for the Nabateans. It’s a narrow and easily defensible canyon that extends for one kilometre and features beautiful sandstone formations. It is a marvellous masterpiece carved on the facade of a sandstone mountain. Amazingly, the canyon leads you to the Treasury of the Pharaoh, or Al Khazneh, which stands in the heart of the desert and offers an impressive view.
  • After visiting Al Khazneh, your tour guide will take you to the Roman theatre and the royal tombs dating back to the Byzantine era.
  • Then comes the next stop. It will be in the restaurant. Lunch comes after the visit to these interesting historical monuments. It will be in one of the best restaurants in Petra.
  • Of course, you will continue your trip to Petra, visiting Al Habis Fort. This Fort lies on top of a hill and dates back to the twelfth century. Cheerfully, the breathtaking panoramic view of deep gullies and coloured rock formations leaves such lovely impressions in your soul.

Petra, Jordan

Petra, located in southern Jordan, is a breathtaking place between parallel rocky ranges. Despite its popularity, it is rarely overcrowded. Visitors can explore its dusty tracks and byways for miles in every direction, keeping them occupied for half a day or half a year.

This ancient city served as the capital of the Nabateans, a community initially from Arabia that traded with the Romans and was eventually taken over by them. Grand temples and Christian-era church mosaics still exist. But Petra is most famous for its hundreds of ornately carved classical-style facades in its red sandstone cliffs. The most impressive of these facades mark the tombs of the Nabatean kings.

As you approach, you leave modern urban civilization behind and are greeted by the arid desert hills—the sandstone’s texture, colour, stillness, heat, and clarity of light bombard your senses. However, supernatural power’s lingering, under-the-skin quality seems to seep out of the rock, leaving the most significant impression.

The Siq, meaning “gorge,” is still the main entrance into Petra, just as it was in antiquity. It’s also its most dramatic natural feature. The path twists and turns between bizarrely eroded cliffs for over a kilometre, sometimes widening to form sunlit piazzas in the echoing heart of the mountain.

In other places, the looming walls, which are 150 meters high, close to little more than a couple of meters apart, block sound, warmth, and even daylight.

When you think the gorge can’t go on any longer, you enter a dark, narrow defile, which opens at its end onto a strip of extraordinary classical architecture. As you step out into the sunlight, the famous facade of Petra’s Treasury looms before you.

Carved directly into the cliff face and standing forty meters tall, it’s no wonder this edifice starred in “Indiana Jones” and “The Last Crusade” as the repository of the Holy Grail. The magnificent entrance is nothing short of divine.

It was a long day, lasting for 26 hours, but the visit was definitely worth it. The guide in Jordan was excellent, and the program was designed to provide the maximum viewing experience. The lunch provided was also excellent. However, the Egyptian side was not well-organized, and we had to wait an hour on the road after hotel pickups for a disorganized guide. The ferry terminal was chaotic with security and passport checks, insufficient seating for everyone and unpleasant toilets. Nevertheless, the Jordan side of the trip was very enjoyable and will remain in our memories forever.
