Dolphins are a fascinating group of aquatic mammals that belong to the infraorder Cetacea. They are classified into different families, including Delphinidae, Platanistidae, Iniidae, Pontoporiidae, and possibly extinct Lipotidae. Currently, there are 40 extant species of dolphins.
Dolphins are found in different sizes, ranging from the 1.7-metre-long Maui’s dolphin to the 9.5 m and 10-tonne orca. Male dolphins are usually larger than females, with streamlined bodies and two limbs modified into flippers. Some species of dolphins are known for their speed and agility, as they can travel up to 29 kilometres per hour or leap about 9 metres.
Dolphins use their conical teeth to catch fast-moving prey, and they have well-developed hearing, which is adapted for both air and water. They also have a layer of fat, or blubber, under their skin to keep warm in cold water. Dolphins are widespread; most species prefer the warm waters of the tropics, while some prefer colder climates. They feed primarily on fish and squid, but some, like the orca, feed on large mammals like seals.
Male dolphins mate with multiple females yearly, but females only mate every two to three years. Calves are typically born in the spring and summer, and females are responsible for raising them. Dolphins produce a variety of vocalizations, usually in the form of clicks and whistles.
Despite their intelligence and popularity, dolphins face threats from human activities like hunting, bycatch, habitat loss, and marine pollution. Some cultures worldwide have depicted dolphins in various ways. Dolphins are sometimes kept in captivity and trained to perform tricks, with the bottlenose dolphin being the most common species in captivity.
