About Alexandria
Alexandria is a significant city and governorate in Egypt. It is also one of the greatest cities on the Mediterranean Sea. Also, it was the capital of Egypt for an extended period. This period extends from its foundation by Alexander the Great in 332 BCE until its surrender to the Arabs in 642 CE. Alexandria became an important centre of Hellenistic civilization and remained the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt and Roman and Byzantine Egypt for almost 1,000 years. This capital was best known for the Lighthouse of Alexandria “Pharos”, its Great Library, and the Necropolis. Pharos is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the Necropolis. Alexandria was once the second most powerful city of the ancient Mediterranean region, after Rome. Nowadays, this city appears as one of Egypt’s largest cities. Indeed, it is a major seaport and an industrial centre.
Alexandria governorate lies on the Mediterranean Sea at 183 km northwest of Cairo in Lower Egypt and partially consists of the western part of the Nile Delta.
