Also, they richly decorated them and filled them with treasures for the afterlife. The Valley of the Kings is home to the tombs of ancient Egyptian kings, e.g., the tombs of great pharaohs Ramses II and Tutankhamun.

Temple of Amenhotep III

The Temple of Amenhotep III is one of the fantastic temples on the west bank of the Nile River in the Theban Necropolis, Luxor governorate. Amenhotep III, pharaoh of the Dynasty XVIII, built this temple about 1400 BC. Also, Colossi of Memnon: Two massive mono-stone statues of king Amenhotep III are the significant remains of a vast mortuary temple.

Temples of Karnak

Karnak Temple: It is the largest temple complex in the ancient world. Amazingly, it represents the achievement of many generations of ancient builders and pharaohs. Its old name is Ipet-isut, meaning “the most sacred of places.” Continuously the building of this complex temple lasted more than two thousand years. It comprises three main temples, smaller enclosed temples, and several outer temples on 247 acres. The great “Hypostyle Hall” is an incredible forest of giant pillars.

The time taken to build and develop Karnak is the crucial difference between it and most of Egypt’s other temples and sites. It took a long time to arrive at its final shape. Here, we are not talking about a single temple; but a complex of temples. As an ancient Egyptian temple, its construction started in the Middle Kingdom and continued to Ptolemaic times. Almost all the rulers of Ancient Egypt left their mark in this vast and colossal complex. In total, approximately thirty pharaohs contributed to the buildings. This construction and renovation process has led to size, complexity, and diversity not seen elsewhere. It is the largest religious building ever made, covering about 200 acres! Additionally, it was a place of pilgrimage for nearly 2,000 years.

Luxor Temple

Luxor Temple is an Ancient Egyptian temple complex located on the east bank of the Nile River. It marks the ancient Egyptian city Thebes with its high columns and adds fame to the current governorate of Luxor. Amenhotep III (1390-52 BC) initiated the construction of this temple, but Tutankhamun (1336-27 BC) and Horemheb (1323-1295 BC) completed it. Finally, Ramses II (1279-13 BC) added his widely spread temple. At the same time, we can see a granite shrine toward the rear dedicated to Alexander the Great (332-305 BCs).

Amenhotep III and Ramses II dedicated the majestic Luxor Temple to the god Amun. The Temple of Luxor was the centre of the most important festival – the festival of Opet. This festival was to reconcile the human aspect of the ruler with the divine office.

Snorkeling in Hurghada

Hurghada Snorkelling in the Red Sea gives the visitor many underwater sites. Hurghada snorkelling offers many reef sites, both near and far from shore, from little islands to submerged pinnacles. Once a tiny fishing village, Hurghada has transformed into a bustling tourist metropolis with huge beachside hotels and an even more enormous roster of potential excursions.

Marine Life in Hurghada

As some of you probably know, the Red Sea offers a variety of corals. The Red Sea includes over 5% of the world’s coral reefs. There’s more coral to observe for scuba divers, but snorkelers can enjoy portions near the shore. The same goes for fish species. There are a good amount of schools of fish in the shallow areas of the ocean. Some popular fish within the Red Sea are barracuda, goatfish, mackerel, surgeonfish, tuna, angelfish, butterflyfish, clownfish, triggerfish, parrotfish and, of course, the lovely turtles.

A snorkel trip to Hurghada puts you face to face with the Red Sea Riviera’s extraordinary marine life in almost impossibly clear waters. Egypt snorkel spots are world-famous for visibility, reaching up to 70 meters in some places. The country’s sea coast and islands differ dramatically from its underwater landscape, which explodes in diversity and abundance of colourful creatures and topography. The Hurghada reefs are typically shallow and sloping, making them suitable for beginner snorkelers. All a snorkeler’s favourite reef inhabitants can be found in Hurghada waters – parrotfish, surgeonfish, butterflyfish, anemonefish, pufferfish, sweetlips, colourful wrasses, morays, stingrays, and turtles. As a bonus, seeing dolphins on Hurghada boat trips between the shore and your snorkel sites is common.

Best Snorkel Sites in Hurghada

Giftun Islands, with Paradise Beach and Orange Bay, especially Mahmya Beach, is one of the most-visited snorkel sites in Hurghada. This sea island lies a 45-minute boat ride from the Egyptian coast. The clear waters around Giftun hold multiple reefs for snorkelling, where calm conditions and easy access allow everyone to enjoy the plentiful fish and colourful corals with dolphin-frequented. Sunbathing on the beach makes a very engaging complementary activity for many visitors.

A snorkel excursion in Hurghada may also include Abu Ramada Island and the Magawish Islands, where divers and snorkelers can find morays, nudibranchs, rays, barracudas and turtles. There are multiple reefs to visit, some areas with excellent coral and a chance at notable sightings like Napoleon Wrasse.

Hurghada Nearby Snorkelling Sites

Along the coastline south of Hurghada city are the bays which offer the best snorkelling in Hurghada’s mainland area. Makadi Bay is the snorkel site of these bays in that you can reach from Hurghada, most renowned for its coral reefs. In Makadi, you will find the pink, purple, and blue stubby branching corals (Pocillopora sp.), which typify healthy reefs of the area, along with massive corals and swaying soft corals, all decorated with a rainbow of flittering reef fish. Makadi’s clear waters also hold turtles, rays, puffers, barracuda, octopus, and morays.

Soma Bay is another area with comprehensive offerings for snorkelers; the colourful corals in Soma also host the full range of fish life, including gatherings of Raccoon Butterflyfish with their black eye patches, Blue-spotted Stingrays, sweetlips, and multi-patterned wrasses. Just offshore, Soma Bay also holds a couple of coral pinnacles that divers and snorkelers can enjoy.

Sahl Hasheesh Bay has a lagoon filled with reef creatures and coral, including lionfish and octopus. Tours to this area often include dolphin-watching – and may even give you a chance to safely and cautiously jump in the water with these fantastic animals.

Best Time to Snorkel in Hurghada

Hurghada snorkelling can be enjoyed year-round. In Egypt, the primary seasonal variation concerns water temperature, which can cool to 21 Celsius in the winter and heat to 30 Celsius in the summer. However, as a snorkeler, you will always be in the ocean’s surface layer, which is the most warmed by the sun. If you are concerned about getting cold, consider bringing a wetsuit along on vacation. Buying or renting a wetsuit in Egypt is straightforward and much less bulky.

Some recommend avoiding the hottest time of year in July and August. If you do not like to sweat or are prone to heat exhaustion, May and June during Springtime or September through November during Autumn are the best seasons to visit.

The main attraction of the city is the 40-meter Central Mosque. The mosque rises in the old district of the town, where the Arab-African flavour is still apparent. Nearby there is a Coptic church and various administrative buildings.

On the first day of accommodation, tourists usually desire to know the city. We can divide the Hurghada sightseeing tours into the following types:

If tourists are not staying in the abovementioned areas, we may apply an additional charge for the transfer. Therefore, we recommend ensuring the town/area you dwell in.

History of Hurghada

Until as late as the 80s, Hurghada was just a tiny fishing village. However, heavy international investment coupled with the natural beauty has led to Hurghada quickly becoming Egypt’s most famous beach holiday destination for UK holidaymakers and international holidaymakers looking for a chilled-out atmosphere and beautiful beaches.

Not much is known about Hurghada itself before its development for tourism. It was a reasonably unremarkable village known by locals for its stunning location and small fishing industry.

History of Hurghada in Ancient Egypt

Better known in the area is the port of El Quseir, about 80km (almost half the distance from Washington, DC to New York City) south of Hurghada and a large and well-known port used for centuries to import coffee from the Republic of Yemen.

In 1493 BC, Queen Hatshepsut sent an expedition to the legendary land of Punt in the Horn of Africa – now known as Somalia. The Ancient Egyptian explorers travelled to Punt down the lifeblood of Egypt- the river Nile and then through Wadi Tumilat in the Eastern Delta and then on to the Red Sea. Evidence suggests the Egyptians would disassemble their boats, carry them overland and then use them for trading in the Red Sea.

This successful expedition from Egypt to Punt bought back precious treasures such as Gold, ebony, wild animals and skins, ivory, spices and much more.

The port of Al Quseir has played a significant part in the local area of Hurghada’s history and Egypt’s history.

Recent History of Hurghada

In much more recent history, Hurghada was founded as a holiday resort explicitly aimed at the water sports market. With its famously clear Red Sea waters filled with beautiful coral reefs and wildly varied marine life, from colourful fish to turtles and dolphins, Hurghada offers fantastic scuba diving and snorkelling trips.
