Sharm El Sheikh City

Sharm el-Sheikh is an Egyptian resort located on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula and surrounded by the Red Sea. This resort’s sheltered sandy beaches, clear waters and coral reefs are remarkable.

Location of Sharm El Sheikh City

Sharm El-Sheikh city extends about 120 km along the Red Sea on the tip of the Sinai Peninsula and is 504 km from Cairo. It is bordered by El Tor city in the northwest, the Red Sea in the south, Dahab in the northeast and the Gulf of Aqaba to the east.

Sharm El-Sheikh is one of the cities in the South Sinai governorate of Sinai, Egypt. This place was with deficient population for long periods of Egyptian history. A small community inhabited its northern part – Nabq. During the last 100 years, Sharm El-Sheikh has become essential for its strategic location. This importance of the site led to its transformation from a fishing village into a major port and naval base to serve the Egyptian Navy.

Like all the areas located in the Sinai Peninsula, Israel occupied Sharm El-Sheikh during the Suez Crisis of 1956. and it was delivered back to Egypt in 1957. A United Nations peacekeeping force was stationed there until the 1967 Six-Day War for the crisis between Egypt and Israel. Once again, Israel recaptured this city after this war. By then, Israel had started some projects in the area, which led to the more commercial development of the location of Sinai. Thus, the Israelis built the town of Ofira, overlooking Sharm El Maya Bay and the Nesima area, and opened the first tourist-oriented establishments 6km north at Naama Bay. Sharm El Sheikh remained under Israeli control until the Sinai Peninsula was restored to Egypt in 1982 under the Egypt–Israel Peace Treaty of 1979.

With the restoration of Sinai in 1982, the Egyptian government launched an initiative to encourage the city’s development. No wonder all these efforts turned the town into an international tourist destination.
